After a long and drab winter, it seems that the weather in Vancouver is finally looking up! May long weekend will be a great time to go out and enjoy some of that sunshine. Here are just some suggestions for the upcoming weekend.
BC Ferries will be adding 91 sailings to its most popular routes between Vancouver and Vancouver Island. There are some great camp sites - there still may be some availability or stay on the lookout for cancellations - and a ton of outdoor adventures. We found this cool surf and paddleboard "touring" in Tofino that looks like a lot of fun: https://tofinopaddle.com/products/tofino-paddleboarding-long-weekend/
The Island is one of our favourite places to visit. There's so much to do outdoors and when the weather is good, like it's shaping up to be for this upcoming weekend, nothing is better than sitting on a beach with a drink in hand and enjoying all that nature has to offer!
Whistler will be a happening place over the May long weekend. The annual Go-Fest will draw in the crowds where people will enjoy concerts, films, art displays, a golf tournament and much more. And if you miss the British car show at VanDusen Botanical Gardens on Saturday, some of the cars will be on display in Whistler on Sunday. For more details, visit the Go-Fest website here: http://www.greatoutdoorsfest.com/
If you're the outdoorsy type, try a hike on the way up to Whistler. We recently took our friends camping at Porteau Cove and hiked the Squamish Chief. We only made it halfway but the views are spectacular at the top. Just make sure you give yourself enough time to complete the hike (11km round trip). It's fairly steep and the hike is not an easy one so keep that in mind before you make plans to go. If you're not interested in the hike but still want to enjoy the views, fret not! There's the Sea to Sky Gondola that will take you 885m above sea level to the top. Whichever way you choose to get up there, the views are worth every bit of effort.
Travelling during long weekends are never ideal so if that's not for you, there are still plenty of things to do here on the lower mainland. The Royal Canadian Circus will be at the Guildford Town Centre in Surrey from May 17-21. A great place to take the entire family; sit under the iconic tents with popcorn in hand and watch the amazing performances.
We're training up for the Valley GranFondo that's happening in July so we've been hitting the bike trails a lot as of late. Check out this website for some really great trails fit for the whole family: http://www.letsgobiking.net/
Let us know what you end up doing or if you have other suggestions, we'd love to hear from you!
